- In Wake County alone, 60,000 individuals roughly 600 men and women will be released from state and federal prisons to return to our communities. Yet these individuals face significant barriers to employment after their release. These barriers include: employers’ attitudes towards individuals with criminal records, legal barriers, lack of education, lack of employment readiness skills, financial obstacles and a lack of stable living conditions. Employment is critical to an ex-offender’s successful reintegration; yet prospective employers have their own set of interests when considering whether to hire an ex-offender.
|
- While we understand an employer’s reluctance to hire ex-offenders based on their previous lack of work history, studies have shown that employers who have hired ex-offenders have had a positive experience. Most employers have indicated having a positive impact on hiring, through completion of transitional employment incentive programs after being released, life skills training, soft skills training, and general work readiness training and specific job skills training.
